How to Treat Red & Irritated Skin

    • 1). Determine the cause of the irritation. If you suspect it's an allergic reaction, stop using the lotion or detergent that is causing the issue. If it's a sun burn, stay out of the sun for several days until your skin has a chance to heal.

    • 2). Wash the skin with a gentle cleanser. By cleansing the skin, you'll remove any irritants that may have remained behind on it. Choose a cleanser that is designed for sensitive skin to prevent further irritation.

    • 3). Put a cool compress on the skin. Soak a washcloth in cool water, or wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply it to the skin. The cool compress will help to relieve redness due to warmth and alleviate swelling.

    • 4). Fill a bathtub with lukewarm water. Add two cups of oatmeal and soak in the tub for 15 to 20 minutes. Oatmeal contains soothing properties which will calm irritated skin. Make sure the water is tepid rather than hot. Hot water will further dry and irritate your skin.

    • 5). Place hydrocortisone cream on the irritated area. Hydrocortisone cream will relieve itchiness and irritation. It will also soothe inflammation and redness.

    • 6). Apply aloe vera gel to the irritated area. With natural healing properties, aloe vera gel can restore calm to red and irritated areas. Choose all-natural aloe vera gel which is free of coloring and fragrances.

    • 7). Drink plenty of water. Your skin won't be properly hydrated unless you drink sufficient water. Aim for at least 64 ounces daily. If you are dehydrated, your skin will be further irritated.

    • 8). Rub Vitamin E oil on your skin. You can puncture a Vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents onto your skin. Vitamin E is essential to skin health and can aid in recovery.
