How to Make Bottom Rigs

    • 1). Spool a medium-heavy to heavy action rod and reel with 15- to 20-pound test monofilament fishing line. Cut an 18-inch piece of line, which you will use as a leader.

    • 2). Select a sinker that is heavy enough to keep your rig pegged to the bottom. The weight depends on the depth of water and amount of current, but should probably be at least 1/2-ounce.

    • 3). Slide the sinker onto the end of the main fishing line, and then attach a barrel swivel to the end of the line. Use a Palomar knot (see Resources) to attach the line to the swivel.

    • 4). Tie one end of the leader to the open end of the barrel swivel.

    • 5). Tie a hook to the other end of the leader. For channel catfish, hook sizes 2 and 4 are effective. Use larger hooks -- 2/0 or larger -- for flathead catfish.

    • 6). Rig your bait onto the hook.
