How to Learn Games in Spanish
- 1). Purchase the Spanish version of familiar English-language board games, such as Operation and Twister. Loteria, the Spanish version of bingo, is sold at local Latino markets, candy stores and websites such as Mex Grocer. Loteria uses images such as mermaids and shrimp, rather than numbers, which works at expanding Spanish vocabulary.
- 2). Take note of the game pieces and colors in the games. Search for the Spanish translation of game pieces, shapes and colors using English-to-Spanish translation books or on websites such as Espanol-Ingles.
- 3). Pronounce names, shapes and colors of items in the game in Spanish. For example, in the game of Twister there are red, yellow and green circles. The Spanish translations for these words are rojo, amarillo y verde circulos. However, in Spanish you say the word circulo before saying the particular color, such as circulo rojo.
- 4). Invite friends or fellow Spanish-speaking students to play a Spanish game. Explain the instructions in English to each player unfamiliar with the game. Then explain which words will be spoken in Spanish and say the English equivalent. Use the English-to-Spanish translation book if necessary or ask invitees who speak Spanish for the correct pronunciation.
- 5). Play the game as you would in English, with the same rules. If playing Loteria, shuffle the playing cards and use pinto beans as game pieces. Say colors, body parts and the name of each image out loud to all players in Spanish first, then translate the word into English. Speaking the words out loud make it easier to learn and memorize each word, as well as pronounce them correctly.
