Urethral Inserts Safe, Effective, Comfortable For Sui, Study Concludes
A 2002 clinical study conducted at the University of Iowa College of Medicine has concluded, based on the results of the study, that the use of urethral insert was a safe, effective, and comfortable method of treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Succeeding studies also yielded the same positive results -- with one particular long-term study showing that 93 percent of women in the test claimed to have been completely dry when using the urethral insert and that 95 percent of them would recommend the device to a friend.
While not exactly a household name, the urethral insert has gradually gained acceptance from both physicians and women who have tried this device. This urethral insert may be described as a small, single-use product consisting of a narrow silicone tube enclosed in a sleeve that is soft, pliable and containing mineral oil. It has no hard surface being smooth and seamless which is meant to protect the delicate tissue. Its design was meant to conform to a womans body in order to make it comfortable for the user.
The urethral insert is intended to prevent leakage of urine without medications or surgery. Since this product is available through prescription only, a patient must consult first with her doctor who will determine if this device is suitable for her condition. The doctor will then fit the patient with the correct size and instruct her on how to use it.
Cases where the urethral insert has proven to effective include those considered mild to severe cases of SUI, weak pelvic floor muscles, weak muscles around the urethra, all other types of urinary incontinence, those where other treatments of SUI including surgeries were not successful, and even women in the menopausal stage.
Upon insertion of the device, women have reported to get the feeling of being dry and may feel comfortable with the product in as short as two days with frequent use. These devices are removed whenever a woman feels like urinating and may insert another one is she so desires. Some may use these devices regularly or they may do so only in certain activities in the house, workplace or any social gathering. Whenever an occasion or need arises, a user may simply remove the old device and insert a new one. It is also advisable to have this device removed before going to bed at night.
No adverse reactions or severe complications have been reported so far by users. Posing more of a problem with the use of this product is the possibility of contracting urinary tract infection or bacteria in the urine. In the initial stages also, a little bleeding or spotting may be experienced by some due to irritation while still getting used to the device. Overall, surveys reveal that an overwhelming number of users felt that they enjoyed a better quality of life with the use of the urethral insert.
