Motorbike Tyre Safety

For motorcyclists, driving safety depends largely on tyres - as the only point of contact between your motorcycle and the road, you are reliant on their integrity and performance.
TyreSafe, one of the UK's leading tyre safety organisations, is leading a new motorbike safety initiative called PACT, to ensure bikers take care of their tyres, and themselves.
PACT stands for: P - Performance: Legal, good quality tyres with sufficient tread depth will give you better grip, handling, braking and a smoother ride.
Better-performing tyres also give you better fuel economy.
A - Air Pressure: Tyres with the right air pressure will help keep you safe.
Incorrectly inflated tyres are one of the top reasons for tyre failure, as overheating can cause dangerous blowouts.
Properly inflation improves overall performance, too.
Check your pressure once a week using an accurate pressure gauge.
C - Condition: Inspect your tyres for any obvious bulges, punctures, cuts, embedded objects or uneven tread wear.
If you find any of these, take your motorcycle to a garage or tyre specialist immediately.
T - Tread Depth: Insufficient tread depth means reduced grip, handling and braking, especially on wet roads.
The legal minimum depth for motorbikes over 50cc is 1mm.
It's especially important to do these safety checks in the spring, when many riders may be taking their bikes out for the first time of the year, having kept them in storage through the winter.
Damp or cold conditions, or fluctuations in temperature and humidity can affect the condition of your tyres during this downtime, and they may have become unsafe.
Any of the above points can affect your acceleration, braking, steering, cornering and the general quality of ride, not to mention your safety and the cost of repairs and replacement that could be avoided by properly maintaining your tyres in the first place.
If you are caught with illegal tyres, you may receive a fine and penalty points on your license.
Even worse than that, by riding with sub-standard, wrongly inflated or badly conditioned tyres, you run a very real risk of a serious accident.
TyreSafe's PACT campaign aims to educate and remind motorcycle riders to maximise their enjoyment and safety by taking good care of their tyres.
If you need repairs or replacements, it's possible to get high quality, cheap tyres online.
And specialists at a garage will always be able to give you advice on the best tyres for your bike.
