Hemorrhoids in Truckers: Nutrition
It is truly a challenge to stay healthy while sitting in your truck for hours on end, day after day, week after week.
You sit too much, are probably over-weight, experience too much vibration, eat the wrong foods and probably too much of them.
You don't have adequate fluid intake, you're probably constipated, you have bad bowel habits, your lower abdominal pressure is way increased, and, you probably have hemorrhoids! There are many things about your lifestyle that can't be changed, but there are many that can be.
Fortunately, bad nutritional habits are one of the ones that can be changed.
It may be hard, but you, oh hearty road warrior...
you who can endure the challenge and hardship of being a trucker in the first place, few of us could, can do what is necessary to improve your health! I know you can do it! Here are some ideas for you...
I know you'll have more of you own.
Start today: Fiber! Fiber! Fiber! Lest you think my keys got stuck, I want for you to understand that increasing your fiber intake is the most significant step you can take to avoid hemorrhoids and treat the ones you already have before they get so bad that they may require surgery! To increase your fiber intake, eat:beans, peas, nuts, seeds, whole wheat grains, cereals, and pasta, fruits, vegetables.
Have a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack, healthful of course.
Otherwise, when it is meal time you will be too hungry and will probably eat too much and eat the wrong things.
Make the snacks something that adds to your health program...
not something that leaves you worse off.
Chunks of fresh fruits and vegetables can be kept in your fridge if you have one; if not, use an insulated cooler or an electric one that is powered by your cigarette lighter.
Munch on whole wheat crackers or air-popped popcorn.
One last note on fiber: Most truck stops and all drug stores sell small booklets listing fiber content of foods.
Use it as a guide until you get used to the approximate fiber content of the foods you most commonly use.
Women should try to eat at least 21-25 grams of fiber per day; men should shoot for at least 30-38 grams per day.
Here's a sample of how easy it is to add fiber: Grams of fiber in good foods: -an apple has 4.
5 grams -one cup of whole wheat spaghetti has 6 grams -3/4 cup Bran Flakes has 5 -one cup of cooked Great Northern beans has a whopping 19 grams and a cup of split peas has 16 grams (you can see that beans and lentils are a fabulous source of fiber.
) These steps might be hard for you in the beginning because you've eaten the same way for a long time.
However, if you have hemorrhoids yourself, or know someone who does, you understand that there is nothing casual or simple about them.
They will not be ignored...
left untreated they will take on a life of their own and leave you miserable.
Come on, Good Buddy! You're worth more than that! Happy hemorrhoid-free truckin'!
