How to Make a Red Block Patio

    • 1). Using the shovel, dig up the area where you plan to place the patio. Dig enough to remove all of the grass and vegetation from the area, but don't remove much dirt.

    • 2). Level the area with the rake. It does not have to be perfect because you will be putting a layer of sand down. Try to remove any major ridges and large clumps.

    • 3). Pour out the sand and level it with the back of the garden rake to a depth of 2 inches. Using a tamper, tamp down the sand to pack it firm. A tamper is a large, flat, square piece of metal with a handle on it. Using one will ensure that the sand will not shift.

    • 4). Begin laying the red pavers. Start in one corner and always stand on the paver you have just laid so that you will not disturb the sand bed. Continue until the patio is complete.

    • 5). Toss sand onto the patio blocks and sweep with the broom to fill in the gaps and stop the blocks from shifting. You may have to do this again in a couple of weeks because of settling.
