Should I Use Landscape Fabric When Planting Daylillies?

    Using Landscape Fabric

    • Landscape fabric will help prevent weeds and grass from growing into your daylily garden bed. Water will still reach the rhizomes (roots) and the daylilies will grow through the landscape fabric without a problem.

    Not Using Landscape Fabric

    • If you have had issues with weeds in the past, use a pre-emergent herbicide instead of the landscape fabric when planting your daylilies. If weeds emerge, manually pull them up or carefully spray only the weeds (and grass) with a nonselective herbicide.

    Bottom Line

    • Daylilies do not require landscape fabric to thrive, but your garden will need less maintenance if you lay the fabric. When laying landscape fabric, apply 3 inches of mulch on top. Reapply the mulch as needed because the landscape fabric, which is usually black, will absorb sunlight and the soil will get too hot.
