How to Work With Splines in Sketchup
- 1). Open your Web browser on the Sketchucation forum page that has a link for the splines plug-in. Follow the directions on that page to obtain a free Sketchucation account, and install the plug-in to your Sketchup plugins folder.
- 2). Open Sketchup, and then click the "View" menu's "Toolbar" command to display a list of toolbars. Click the "BZ_Toolbar" item to display the set of Bezier tools, which allow you to make and edit splines. Click the leftmost icon in the toolbar to run the "Classic Bezier" tool.
- 3). Click anywhere on the ground to define the spline's first control point. Drag the mouse to another location on the ground, and then click again to define another control point. Drag the mouse to a location between the first two control points that is not aligned with those points. The spline tool will dynamically draw a curve connecting the first two control points that arcs toward the third control point as you move it. Double-click the mouse to place the third control point and complete the initial shape of the spline.
- 4). Right-click the spine to select it and display a context menu listing commands you can apply to the spline. Click the "Edit" item to enter the spline's editing mode. The spline tool will display orange + icons to indicate the location of the control points you plotted when creating the spline.
- 5). Click a control point to select it for re-positioning. Drag the mouse to another location on the ground. The control point will follow your mouse, and the spline will reshape dynamically to smoothly flow through all control points. Click the mouse to commit to a new location for the control point and exit editing mode.
- 6). Enter the spine's editing mode as you did to move a control point. Double-click an edge connecting two control points to make the spline tool insert a new control point. Double-click an existing control point to remove it.
