Lake Stevens is 36 miles north of Seattle, eight miles east of Everett, and named for a 1,000-acre lake adjacent to the town. With more than 14,000 residents as of 2007, according to the city's website, Lake Stevens is an affordable suburb for families seeking a slower pace and smaller school district. Highland, home of the Hornets, is one of six elementary schools in Lake Stevens housing kindergarten through fifth grade. The school opened in 1999 and is "orderly, efficient, high-performing and full of school and community pride," according to Highland's online performance report from 2008. Approximately 516 students attend Highland and the physical building includes 25 classrooms, six expanded learning areas, a library, music rooms and a gymnasium. Highland Elementary is on the north end of Lake Stevens near Highway 92, also known as the Granite Falls Highway.

Lake Stevens Middle School is one of two schools serving grades six and seven, and follows a schedule of 70-minute block periods during the school day. Built in 1961, the school's capacity is 732 students in 26 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, library, two computer labs and a music room as well as outdoor athletic fields and a gymnasium, according to the school's performance report. Lake Stevens Middle School is west of the lake near Highway 9, a main north-south thoroughfare of Lake Stevens.

Labeled a "mid-high" school, Cavelero serves grades eight and nine in Lake Stevens and prepares students for high school in 10th grade. The physical design of the school reflects the educational philosophy. The design earned an honor award from the American Institute of Architects in 2009. The school of 1,500 students divides into four smaller personalized learning centers to help students and staff achieve their mission of "ensuring academic success through positive relationships in the classroom, school and community," according to Cavelero's performance report.

Lake Stevens High School, home of the Vikings, serves grades 10 through 12 and follows a traditional six-period daily schedule. Built in 1979, the high school has 75 classrooms on 38 acres of property featuring a performing arts building, multi-purpose room, two gymnasiums, two greenhouses and 19 portable classrooms to accommodate a maximum of 1,600 students. The school's goal is to help each student "create a vision for their future" through a rigorous curriculum, according to the school's performance report. Lake Stevens High School is one mile north of the lake and just south of Highway 92.
