    Base

    • Start with an existing item like a notebook or old hardcover book, then embellish with monster details. A blank notebook or journal can be used if you want to be able to use your monster book to take notes, while a hollowed-out hardcover or a book-shaped box made from paper mache works if you want to store small items inside. The size of your finished monster book, and amount of supplies required, will depend on the size of the base item you choose. The existing covering doesn't matter, since you will be applying a fur or skin to the exterior of the base.

    Skin

    • Your monster book needs a fun or scary outer covering. Look for fur synthetic fabric or felt at any craft store, or go with a more realistic leather or suede. Once you decide on the skin, cut it to size and wrap it around the exterior of the book. Secure with glue that is rated for use with fabric for best results; regular PVC craft glue may not be strong enough to hold the skin for long periods of time.

    Teeth

    • You can create teeth for your book from felt, craft foam or polymer clay. Cut a strip of teeth from white or off white wool felt and attach them to the front of the book, allowing them to lap over the edge. You can also create individual teeth from ivory or white polymer clay, then bake and glue on individually. The depth of the teeth will depend on the depth of your book or box.

    Details

    • Add pre-made glass eyes to the top of your monster book using glue. If you can't find glass eyes you like, you can craft your own using polymer clay or felt. Once you glue the eyes into place, you can add other features. Finish by buckling a belt or tying a ribbon around the monster book; the books in the story needed to be securely muzzled to keep them from biting.
