    • 1). Line a broiler pan or a deep cookie sheet with aluminum foil. The foil will help keep the pan from getting scorched by the charcoal.

    • 2). Fill the bottom of the broiler pan with a layer of charcoal briquettes. Set the pan outside on non-flammable surface, such as a concrete patio or sidewalk.

    • 3). Light the charcoal. Wait several minutes for the coals to begin to glow red. Spread the coals out evenly with grilling tongs.

    • 4). Put on a pair of oven mitts. Place a coffee mug next to each of the four corners of the broiler pan.

    • 5). Remove one of the grates from your oven. Place the oven grate on top of the coffee mugs. Adjust the coffee mugs so the corners of the oven grate sit evenly on each mug. The grate should be centered over the broiler pan. Keep your oven mitts on for this step.

    • 6). Tape the corner edges of the grate to the coffee mugs using duct tape or masking tape. This will prevent the grate from slipping and falling into the pan when you place food onto it.

    • 7). Use the grill as you normally use a charcoal grill.

    • 8). Wait until the next day before dumping the charcoal from the broiler pan. Place the oven grate back into your oven. Remove the aluminum foil from the pan, which should not be scorched or charred at all.
