How to Convert KW to HP
- 1). Determine the amount of kilowatts you'll need to convert. If you're starting with watts, first divide by 1000. For example, 1750 watts is 1.75 kilowatts.
- 2). Multiply the figure from Step 1 by 0.7457 on your calculator to convert kilowatts to horsepower. To take the above example, 1.75 kilowatts x 0.7457 = 1.3 horsepower. One kilowatt is a smaller amount of power than one horsepower, so the equivalent horsepower number will be smaller than the kilowatt figure. It's just a unit conversion, so the amount of real power is the same either way.
- 3). Apply the horsepower number you calculated in Step 2 to an engineering situation. Most countries use the metric kilowatt for units of power, though you'll still find horsepower used in the United States and a few other places for electric motors and mechanical engines. Engineers still occasionally use the terminology, the horsepower values are convenient to use, and customers of engineering products are still comfortable with horsepower.
