How to Build Salt Crystals

    • 1). Fill the jar with tap water. Pour the water in the pot. Place the pot on the stove and heat over a medium heat until the water boils.

    • 2). Remove the pot from the stove and fill the jar about halfway with the hot water. Add the salt 1 tablespoon at a time until no more salt will dissolve in the water. You have now formed a saturated salt solution.

    • 3). Tie the string to the center of the pencil. Place the pencil over the mouth of the jar so that the string hangs down into the middle of the solution. Make sure that the string hangs down about three-quarters of the way into the jar. The string should not touch the bottom of the jar.

    • 4). Cover the jar with a small, round piece of wax paper to prevent dust from falling in. Do not seal the jar as the water has to evaporate for the crystals to form. You can leave the jar for up to three weeks. Take note of the crystal formation and of the level of the water.
