How to Unstop a Shower Drain
- 1). Remove the retaining screws from the strainer screen on the drain opening. Insert the screwdriver through an opening in the screen and lift it out of the drain carefully without bending the screen.
- 2). Reach into the drain opening with a pair of needle nose pliers. Pull out any debris you can with the pliers' jaws.
- 3). Turn the shower's faucet on briefly so an inch or so of water sits around the drain opening. Place a plunger's cup over the drain opening, then pump the plunger's handle up and down at least a dozen times in an attempt to dislodge the clog.
- 4). Feed a drain auger into the shower's drain opening, turning the auger's crank clockwise. Once you feel the auger contact the clog, retract the auger and clean off any debris from the end of the auger. Repeat this process up to three times to clear the drain fully.
- 5). Replace the drain's screen and tighten the retaining screws. Turn on the shower's hot water for at least two minutes to flush out the drain.
