How Do I Fix a Toilet Valve?
- 1). Turn the water supply off to the toilet at the water main.
- 2). Drain the water from the tank by flushing the toilet.
- 3). Put a small container or bucket below the toilet valve to catch any trapped water that leaks from the valve when its removed.
- 4). Detach the flexible water line from the toilet's tank to the toilet valve using an adjustable wrench to loosen the connection nut.
- 5). Remove the toilet valve from the water supply pipe by loosening and detaching the large hex nut on the valve using a wrench. The valve can now be pulled from the copper pipe. Use a pair of pliers to slide the brass ring from the copper pipe to remove the valve's nut.
- 6). Remove the two hex connection nuts from the new toilet valve. Wrap Teflon thread-wrap tape clockwise over the threaded sections of both valve connections.
- 7). Install the new toilet valve by sliding the larger hex connection nut over the copper supply pipe, with the open threaded side positioned outward. Next, slip the brass ring over the copper pipe, then slip the new toilet valve onto the copper pipe to where it stops. Thread the large hex connection nut onto the new toilet valve's end, and use a wrench to tighten the nut until it is snug.
- 8). Reconnect the flexible water supply line from the toilet's tank at the valve's smaller connection, then use a wrench to tighten the connection nut until it is snug.
- 9). Open the new toilet valve by turning the handle counterclockwise.

Turn the water supply on to the toilet, and allow the toilet tank to fill completely, checking the connection points of the new toilet valve for leakage. Tighten the connecting nuts, if needed, being careful not to overtighten.
