How to Tune Strings on a Floyd Rose
- 1). Loosen the three nut clamps with a 3-millimeter hex wrench without removing them from the nut. One clamp covers the 6th and 5th strings, one covers the 4th and 3rd strings and one covers the 2nd and 1st strings. Loosen the fine-tuning screws on the bridge about halfway.
- 2). Tune the guitar to standard pitch with an electronic tuner. Play the guitar for a few minutes to stretch the strings.
- 3). Check the tuning of the low-E string with the tuner. If the string is sharp, re-tune the low-E, A, D, G and B strings slightly sharp, and tune the high-E string to perfect pitch. If the low-E is flat, re-tune each of the strings slightly flat and tune the high-E to perfect pitch. This is necessary because tuning one string on a Floyd Rose bridge affects the other strings. Recheck the tuning with the electronic tuner and repeat the process as needed.
- 4). Inspect the bridge plate to make sure it sits parallel with the surface of the guitar. The bridge plate may be tilted forward away from the guitar or back toward the guitar -- but needs to be parallel with the surface. Adjust by turning its screws clockwise if the bridge plate is tilted forward and counterclockwise if tilted backward. Adjusting the bridge plate is only necessary when you set up the bridge or when changing string gauges. Repeat Step 3 once the bridge plate is in the proper position.
- 5). Re-tighten the three nut clamps with the hex wrench until the nut clamps are secured to the nut.
