Our modern lives are filled with noises from cell phones and televisions to computers, cars and everything around us.
It can be hard to get any peace and quiet during our busy days and then to have to go home to a constant ringing in your ears can be a real nightmare.
There are many causes for ringing ears, with over 59 million people in the US alone complaining of this problem known as tinnitus.
The problem can range from mildly annoying to being so bad that a person is disabled and unable to function due to the level of noise.
There are according to doctors, dentists and audiologists a number of different causes for ringing ears, some of which are external and some internal.
All of these conditions can cause a constant ringing or buzzing in your ears that can slowly drive you off the deep end.
Among the most common causes are: 1.
Age:
As we age a condition called presbycusis occurs which is tinnitus that accompanies the hearing loss that many of us experience once we hit the age of 60.
2.
Earwax:
All of us have some level of earwax in our ear canals, it is supposed to be there to help collect the dirt that otherwise would end up causing bacteria to grow and cause infections.
When we allow the earwax to build up it can cause an impaction that is the perfect cause for ringing ears.
3.
Ear Bones:
In some people a stiffening of their ear bones occurs in their middle ear known as otosclerosis.
This is a genetic problem that runs in some families and causes the abnormal growth of the bones resulting in both hearing loss and tinnitus.
4.
Noise:
According to research the overexposure to loud noises is the number one cause for ringing ears.
Those with jobs such as firefighters, mechanics, and the military routinely are exposed to high levels of noise and are particularly susceptible to tinnitus.
Others who insist on listening to their music turned up loud, especially when using an mp3 player or attending a loud concert will find that all of these noises are a cause for ringing ears.
While all of these are commonly known as a cause for ringing ears there are other causes that are not as well know such as stress and depression, Meniere's disease which is an inner ear disorder caused by problems with inner ear fluid and a variety of head trauma and injuries.
No matter what the cause is, the sound can drastically affect a person's quality of life.
There are medications that can help reduce the loudness of the ringing and alternative therapies that are also proving to be very successful that are well worth looking into in order to restore the peace and quiet you need to enjoy your life.
