Architecture features prominently in the image Australia projects to the world. One of the country's enduring symbols is the Sydney Opera House, rising imperiously over the harbor with its jutting "sails." Modern Australian architecture takes into account many factors specific to the country, including environmental concerns. The country's frequent drought conditions have caused leading architects to rethink how water is used in buildings and public areas. - Consistently ranked in the top 100 of the Academic Ranking of World Universities during the 2000s, the University of Melbourne has a reputation as a gathering place for some of Australia's top scholars and students. It was also home to the first architectural studies program in Australia, started in the 1860s. Opened in 2008, the university's Melbourne School of Design offers a master's program in architecture. Undergraduate programs include areas of expertise including landscape architecture and urban planning.
