How to Adjust Total Alkalinity in Saltwater Pools
- 1). Test your pH balance with alkalinity testing strips after a heavy rain or after putting new chemicals into the pool water by placing the test strip into the pool's water.
- 2). Compare the color of the test strip with the color chart provided with your testing strips. The proper level of pH must be between 7.2 and 7.8 alkalinity. If your test strips indicate levels too high, eye irritation could occur when swimming.
- 3). Pour muriatic acid into the deep end of the pool in front of a water jet to ensure good circulation around the pool if the alkalinity is too high. The exact amount of muriatic acid depends on the level of pH in the pool, the size of the pool and the manufacturer's recommendation. Follow the dosing guidelines on the packaging of muriatic acid.
- 4). Apply additional non-iodized salt to the water to the deep end of the pool directly in front of a water jet to ensure good circulation if the alkalinity is too low. The exact amount of salt depends on the level of pH in the pool, the size of the pool and the manufacturer's recommendation. Follow the dosing guidelines on the packaging of salt.
- 5). Wait 24 hours and test the water levels again. Make any additional adjustments as needed.
