You want your swimming pool to be an oasis of relaxing fun.
Learning the proper methods to maintain a swimming pool is easier than you think.
You don't have to hire expensive service companies to do it for you, just follow this quick, easy guide and keep your water healthy, sparkling, and clean.
Keeping your pool water at an optimal balance is not only protecting the health of the swimmers, but it can also lengthen the life of your pool's filters, pumps, and heaters.
Here are the elements for proper water balance:
  • pH levels - this is a measure of the water's acidity.
Keep your pool's water between 7.
    2-7.
    6.
pH levels below this range means the water will become corrosive, and can damage the pool's surface and equipment.
If the pH levels are too high, a scale buildup can occur leaving deposits in and around the pool.
  • Total alkalinity - this is essentially your pool water's resistance to a change in pH levels.
The proper range for good total alkalinity is between 80-150 ppm.
This will help to keep your pH levels in balance.
Having a range of total alkalinity that is too high or too low can result in what is known as 'pH bounce', making it difficult to keep your water in a proper pH range.
  • Calcium hardness - the range for normal calcium hardness is from 175-275 ppm.
Calcium hardness refers to the amount of calcium carbonate, or other dissolved minerals in the water.
Low levels of calcium hardness can lead to corrosion of your pool's equipment or plaster finish.
High levels of calcium hardness create cloudy water and scaling.
  • Stabilizers - this is cyanuric acid and helps your chlorine levels last up to three and half times longer.
The range for good stabilization is 30-50ppm.
For outdoor pools, a minimum level of 40ppm should be maintained.
Without a stabilizer, the sun's rays can quickly destroy the chlorine in your water, which is why it is also referred to as a 'sun shield'.
This helps keep your water safe for people and saves you money in chlorine costs.
These steps will help you to maintain a swimming pool in an optimal, inviting condition.
