Ski Places in Maine

      When people think of Maine, they may think of lighthouses, scrumptious lobster and Stephen King novels. However, there is much to do in Maine including exciting winter sports. Maine is home to many a ski adventure. Maine's mountains offer everything from snowboarding parks, to vertical 2000-foot drops and some of the most challenging ski areas in New England. Wherever travelers go, they will find several places to suit their skiing desires.

    Baker Mountain

    • Baker Mountain is located in Moscow, Maine and consists of five runs and a T-bar lift. It was founded by Allen Quimby Jr. in the 1930s. He put the first rope tow to bring skiers up the slope at Baker Mountain and by 1940s a second one was installed. A T Bar was installed in 1969 and the tows were removed. Volunteer pass holders run the slopes and during school breaks, a ski school is open for operation.

    Big Rock Ski Area

    • Purchased in 2000 by the Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC), Bigrock Ski Area was originally established in 1960. Many improvements have been made to the facility, such as brush clearing, improved snowmaking, trail reconditioning, new lifts and other changes. Cross-country skiing and a snow-tube park round out the many activities to do at this park. An expanded cafe offers a variety of snacks and hot meals for families after a long day at the slopes.

    Mt. Abram

    • Located a few minutes from Bethel, Maine Mt. Abram is nicknamed "A Little Gem" by "Ski" magazine. There are different types of terrain, from beginner to advance slopes, with glade runs and race courses. In addition, there is room for snowboarding enthusiasts to partake in the activities. Five lifts are available to take skiers up to the top and choose from 44 trails. Visitors will get great views of the Lakes Region and Mt. Washington. There is also a tubing park available and trails for cross-country skiers. This is a family-friendly facility with a daycare center, two lodges with shuttle service, and ski and snowboard rentals.
