How to Properly Adjust the Foot Pedal Tension on a Yamaha Tympano
- 1). Place a foot on the foot pedal of a Yamaha timpani. Press downward so the heel portion of the pedal goes down and the toe portion goes up.
- 2). Turn each tuning bolt in numerical order a quarter turn with a timpani key. The bolts are numbered clockwise, beginning with the bolt to the left of the pedal on a six-bolt tipani: 1, 6, 4, 2, 5, 3. An eight-bolt timpani has bolts that are numbered: 1, 7, 4, 6, 2, 8, 3, 5. Repeat this process until the pedal stays down when the foot is removed.
- 3). Put a foot on the pedal, and press it toward the heel and toe. Press the pedal toward the heel and tighten all the bolts 1/8 of a turn if the heel feels heavier. Loosen all bolts 1/2 turn in numerical order, then tighten them one quarter1/4 turn if the heel feels lighter. The pedal is at its optimum setting when the toe and heel feel equal when pressed and the pedal remains in position when the foot is removed.
- 4). Fine tune any fine movement in the pedal by adjusting the tension control knob at the base of the drum. Turn the knob counterclockwise if the pedal moves up and clockwise if the pedal moves down.
