Voicemail from the Dead
This is just a quick story that took place on Labor Day Weekend, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. There had been a couple of deaths in our family: my ex-husband and the kids' dad had passed away five months earlier, and my boyfriend's mother had passed in July.
My boyfriend and I had my son and his friend down to the river for the day for a cookout and to play pool. My son was his dad's namesake, Mark.
The family calls him by his middle name, Andrew or Andy.
We wrapped up the evening and I made sure he got home safe and then went to bed, leaving my cell phone in the downstairs bathroom. When I went to retrieve it in the morning, the battery was dead. After charging it, I saw I has missed four phone calls late at night from a familiar number.
After the first call, a voicemail was left and I listened. It was a staticky male voice that got weaker as it went, like it was running out of energy, then ended with aloud click. I had to listen to it a couple times to get what it was that I was hearing: "Please call Kathy..." Click.
I returned that call several times, but there was not a clue to who this person was. Later that afternoon I called again for the heck of it, and a client of mine answered -- female, Jill. She said that she saw my calls, but she didn't call me.
I was like, "Really, I missed four calls from you and got a Tales from the Darkside voice that wanted me to call. She apologized, but there was really no need.
I had my suspicions as to who had called. I listened to that call several more times, also having Dave, my boyfriend, listen. My conclusion is that my kids' dad needs me to call... but I'm not quite sure what his area code is now!
