Ancient Wisdom - Sanskrit University Varanasi
Varanasi has been a great centre of learning in India as well as an important holy place to Hindus, Buddhists and Jains for centuries. Scholars, philosophers, intellectuals, mystics and saints from all over the world came to Varanasi to study Sanskrit, yoga, philosophy and astrology. Thus a great tradition of learning developed in the city and it was very appropriate that in 1791 a Sanskrit College was set up here by the British East India Company for the study, development and preservation of Sanskrit Vangmaya encompassing literature, grammar, yoga, philosophy, astronomy, astrology among other areas of study. Many erudite texts on a vast range of topics and Hindu legends were written in Sanskrit over several hundred years that warranted a way to safeguard and spread this knowledge.
The library Saraswathi Bhavan Granthalaya was added to the college in 1894 to collect, preserve and publish important Sanskrit manuscripts. Thousands of rare ancient manuscripts are preserved here. Some of the important manuscripts are made accessible to the public by editing and publishing them in the form of books and more than 400 manuscripts have been thus converted. The library was modernized in the late 1980s. From the mid 19th century onwards, translations of Sanskrit manuscripts to English was also accomplished, the most notable being Valmiki's Ramayana along with many other rare Sanskrit texts.
Initially the college offered courses up to graduation. A program of postgraduate studies was introduced as early as 1857, while an examination system was adopted in 1880. In 1958 the status of the college was changed to that of a university. Housed in a set of historical gothic style buildings the university now has six faculties: Veda Vedanga, Sahitya Sanskriti, Darshana (Philosophy), Shraman Vidya, Adhuni Jyan Vigyan and Ayurveda. More than 1,200 Sanskrit medium schools and colleges are affiliated to this university.
