Care for Gold Plated Flatware
- Gold plated flatware consists of base metal that has an electroplated covering of gold. The base metal most commonly used is a nickel silver alloy, but stainless steel is also sometimes used.
- The Ricci Argentieri Company, makers of fine flatware, recommends hand-washing gold plated flatware promptly after use, in hot, soapy water. And the Oneida company, while advertising their gold plated flatware as dishwasher safe, still recommends hand washing as the best method for maintaining the flatware's beauty and shine.
- It is important to dry gold plated flatware with a soft towel immediately after washing, since air drying causes the metal to form spots.
- Gold-plated flatware should be stored in a tarnish-resistant box and kept in a dry location. Use a polish made specifically for gold plate to keep the flatware shiny--this will probably be necessary several times a year.
- Using gold plate daily, rotating place settings to ensure even wear, is the best way to keep it looking beautiful. The tiny scratches that come from everyday wear eventually lend a soft patina to the flatware.
