    • 1). Turn the trimmer upside down so you can easily access the Grass Gator universal bump head. The trimmer head is the black head that extends from the trimmer shaft. The string comes out of the trimmer head.

    • 2). Turn the bump-down retaining screw on the bottom of the head clockwise to remove it. The threads are backwards from a normal bolt.

    • 3). Pull the cover off the universal bump head and pull the bobbin off the trimmer shaft.

    • 4). Cut two pieces of Grass Gator trimmer string to 9-foot lengths with a utility knife.

    • 5). Place the tip of one string into the retaining hole drilled between the top grooves on the side of the bobbin. Rotate the string around the bobbin in the direction of the arrow printed on the top of the bobbin. With 7 inches left unwound, snap the string into the notch on the bobbin.

    • 6). Repeat the winding process with the second string. Place the string into the hole located between the bottom grooves on the side of the bobbin.

    • 7). Slide the bobbin onto the trimmer shaft. Feed the strings through the holes in the side of the cover as you slide the cover over the bobbin.

    • 8). Secure the cover with the bump-down retaining screw. Pull hard on each string to release them from the notches on the bobbin.

    • 9). Start the trimmer and trim as you normally would. When the cutting pattern of the string gets too small to cut the weeds adequately, let off the trigger and bump the retaining screw on the ground. This will compress the spring on the trimmer shaft and allow more string to feed out.
