How to Replace the EBCM in an S10
- 1). Remove the cable on the battery's negative terminal with a socket wrench. This reduces the possibility of an electrical discharge damaging the EBCM when you replace it.
- 2). Wash the area around the EBCM with water and a clean shop cloth to prevent contamination of the EBCM. The EBCM is a flat rectangular box under the vehicle near the driver's side door. It sits atop the brake pressure modulator valve, or BPMV, which has the brake lines connected to it.
- 3). Detach the electrical connectors from the EBCM. Remove the T-25 Torx mounting screws from the EBCM with a T-25 Torx tool. Detach the EBCM from the BPMV by pulling the EBCM gently.
- 4). Clean the mounting surface of the BPMV with a clean cloth. Place the new EBCM on to the BPMV, and fasten new T-25 Torx screws to the EBCM. Tighten the screws to 39 inch-pounds with a T-25 Torx tool.
- 5). Attach the electrical connector to the EBCM. Connect the cable to the battery's negative terminal with a socket wrench.
- 6). Connect a scan tool to the data link connector in the instrument panel to the left of the steering wheel. Perform the tire size calibration function to program the new EBCM. A qualified mechanic typically performs this step.
