Issues and Concerns of Young People
President Obama gave a town hall meeting recently on MTV at which he addressed the concerns of young adults who were in an audience of 250 college students and young professionals who had submitted applications for the opportunity to participate.
Several of the attendees were chosen to ask the President direct questions which he answered.
Some mentioned their own experiences in education, abuse, and bullying.
The President did an excellent job of addressing the concerns that the young people had, but it was the type of meeting where people generally do not change their minds.
They either like him and his policies or they don't.
The mixed group of Democrats and Republicans was most probably heavy on the Democratic side.
Some young Republicans stated that they are Republicans when asking their questions.
Some others said that they had voted for Obama, but they did not state their party although undoubtedly they would be Democrats.
The Republicans clearly were not in favor of the Administration and the Democrats' policies and had concerns about what is happening with health care, taxes, and immigration.
They felt that good Republican ideas were not being incorporated or given a chance.
President Obama stated that he and the Democrats have been trying to work hard with Republicans for compromises.
This is not a time of good working relationships between the two parties.
They are polarized and unwilling to give in for the good of the American people when it does not directly benefit them and their ideologies.
He hopes for greater cooperation after the upcoming elections in order to move forward on unfinished business to improve the economy and make improvements in people's lives.
He said that taxes are not higher as some claim and that corporate taxes are lower because of tax cuts and tax breaks.
He encourages passing tax cuts to anyone making $250,000 or less and for the old tax rates to apply for those incomes above that amount including millionaires.
Asked about the Tea Party, the President said that it is good for people to be engaged and involved.
While he does not agree with their stances on issues, he defends their rights.
He made a point to stress how important education is and how they are trying to make education attainable for all young people who wish to attend college.
The private section is being encouraged to make more scholarships available for math and science teachers as a way to improve education.
Education has always been and continues to be a priority.
Politicians are generally required to keep their cool and to respond in a civil manner even when pointed and personal attacks are made against them.
The President was told that an email response to the question of their greatest fear was from a young woman who said that her greatest fear was that Obama would be reelected.
