      Master herbalists have an extensive knowledge of the history of herbalism, the human body and how herbs and nutrition help the body heal itself. There are several master herbalist programs that can provide you with the needed information and support to complete the program through correspondence.

    Global College of Natural Medicine

    • The Global College of Natural Medicine offers a Master Herbalist program that has a total of 12 lessons divided into three modules; students are given 12 months to complete this program. Students study the three main aspects of herbal medicine which include Western, Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine. In the first module, students learn basic human anatomy, terminology, toxicity and detoxification and the history of herbal medicine. In the second module, students will study both eastern and western medicine, botany and plant identification, materia medica and therapeutic herbalism. In the final module, students learn herbal remedies, dietary guidelines, interactions between herbs, drugs and vitamins and business procedures.

    Vintage Remedies

    • Vintage Remedies offers a comprehensive Master Herbalist program that has of 11 categories of instruction; these categories include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathology and biochemistry, botany and plant identification, therapeutic herbalism, materia medica, pharmacy and dispensing, clinical skills, pharmacognosy, history and philosophy and practice development/career preparation. The clinical master herbalist category is optional; students can attend one of the workshops for clinical skills, and join the mentorship program and the American Herbalist Guild. Although the track for the Clinical Master Herbalist is not a requirement, it is recommended for those who want to start a professional practice or apply for admission into the Guild themselves. There is no time limit for completion of the program, but it generally takes up to three years.

    The School of Natural Healing

    • The School of Natural Healing offers a Master Herbalist program that prepares students for using and identifying local herbs; the study materials are selected based on the student's geographic location. The program consists of a total of 22 courses divided into four categories: family herbalist, nutritional herbology, herbalist and advanced herbalist. Students have three months to complete the family herbalist category and one year each to complete the remaining three categories. In addition to completing these courses, students must also participate in the intensive training that is held at the Annual Master Herbalist Certification Seminar that lasts for six days. Students must contact the school to find out when the next seminar will be held and for enrollment information.
