Special Education services can be essential for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
However, not all ADHD kids need special education and can receive the right education in their mainstream classroom.
If a child qualifies, the kind of special education ADHD services will depend on the severity and nature of the child's difficulties.
There are series of steps that need to be taken for a child to be given special education services.
Firstly the child should be experiencing poor academic performance.
Second, when the problems, either behavioral or academic, become more evident, the teacher or parent should request for the child to be evaluated.
And lastly, the evaluation report will be completed on the basis of whether special education is needed.
If a child is proven to have a disability that affects his/her educational performance, then he/ she will usually automatically be eligible to receive special education.
In cases where the child is entitled for special education, the parents work together with the teaching staff or school personnel in order to develop an IEP or Individualized Education Program.
An IEP is considered as one of the most essential documents for special needs children.
Generally, the IEP considers the specific disabilities of the child, the learning needs that should be addressed and the child's strengths as well.
The strategies to enhance any behavioral and social problems are also taken in consideration.
Once the nature of the child's needs has been specified, the teachers and parents determine the kind of services suitable for addressing the special needs of the child.
Moreover, the place where these services will be held is also considered (such as in a regular classroom or a separate room away from the rest of the class to remove any distractions).
Some researchers believe that almost half of children with ADHD can perform well in school without receiving special education services.
However, that can only be possible if the disorder is well understood and some curriculum adjustments are made to take the ADHD into account.

Significantly, a number of ADHD children (around 40%) who make use of special education services will get them by means of combined placements that include normal classrooms or separate rooms and an in-class support may also be assigned.
This can be a useful strategy as they often act as consultants for teachers and will often be the case manager for the child.
There is a group of children (around 10%) that will need to be educated outside of mainstream schools.
Most of these children are likely to have severe ADHD along with other learning disabilities.
The need for special education ADHD services is not always required, however if you feel your child would benefit from assistance in their schooling you should speak to the school about organizing an assessment.
