Discover Why Foods High in Omega 3 May Not Be Good For You
Once upon a time there was plentiful choice of foods high in omega 3.
But these days omega 3 foods are not as plentiful as they once were.
The reason for this is because one time, you could get omega 3 from meats, poultry and dairy products however with the change in the food that the animals are raised on, there is not as much of this essential fat within them.
You can however get omega 3 foods from the likes of that flaxseed and walnuts; but these are mainly high in ALA fats and although they are good for you, they are not as good for you as the DHA and EPA fats that can be found in oily fish.
The discovery of the essential fats in oily fish came about when those research done into the health of the Eskimos.
What was found was that the Eskimos have high intakes of fatty fish, but very low cases of heart disease.
Research from this discovered that the oily fish contains the two fats DHA and EPA, and further to that research has since found that these two fats particularly the DHA are essential for good healthy heart.
From this research the American Heart Association recommends that you have at least 2 portions of oily fish a week, however to reap the benefits that you can get from these fats, but you would need to be eating fish ideally on a daily basis.
This creates a problem though because the particular fish that have these benefits for your normally are at the high end of the food chain.
This means they are caught in areas where there's particularly high levels of pollution.
What this will mean is that when you consume these fish then you are putting these pollutants in yourself and usually these pollutants are mercury, lead and PCBs for instance and this is something that you really do not want to be doing.
So while these foods are high in omega 3, unfortunately they're not going to be as good for your health as you would've liked.
The answer to this is of course to take supplements, but again, it can be a problems with the supplements, because some companies simply do not remove all of the toxins from their products.
And because the industry is not heavily regulated they can get away with doing this and sometimes even call their products pharmaceutical grade, which is merely a marketing term.
So this would mean it would be as bad as eating the omega 3 foods that have the toxins in the first place.
However to get around this you need to make sure that the supplement you choose has been through a process called molecular distillation, as this process removes all of these unhealthy heavy metals and is also performed at low temperature, this prevents any further oxidization to the fish oil.
This is not a cheap process though, and ultimately it will mean you will pay a little bit more for your supplement; however it is well worth it in the long run.
