The Most Effective Social Anxiety Therapy

Though there was a time in the not too distant path when little was understood about Social Anxiety Disorder, the growing number of Americans affected by it each year has facilitated a corresponding increase in the amount of research devoted to its study.
In addition to learning much about the root causes of the disorder, researchers focusing on developing an effective social anxiety therapy have had remarkable success.
While there is no cure for this condition, there is therapy that can help those afflicted by it to recapture some semblance of control over their reaction to social situations.
Psychotherapy has been found to be an effective social anxiety therapy, and often helps patients to work through the underlying causes of their anxiety.
Though it does not generally address the outward manifestations of the disorder, it has proven its efficacy in helping those suffering from the disorder to change their thought processes and learn to overcome their fears rather than avoiding them.
The key to this cognitive behavior therapy is to reinforce within the mind of the patient that their fears are unfounded and thus irrational.
As noted before, psychotherapy does not directly affect the outward symptoms of the disorder - which is why many attending physicians and therapist prescribe medications for the symptoms, while using therapy to address the inner cause.
Social anxiety therapy often involves the use of an approach called Exposure and Response Prevention.
Put simply, this technique involves encouraging the patient to place themselves into situations where they have no choice but to address their fears directly.
The underlying theory behind this approach is the notion that those suffering from the disorder will come to realize that their fears are unfounded if they are forced to confront those imagined fears on a continual basis.
Given sufficient time, the irrational fear of being judged by others will eventually be replaced with the realization that that fear has no basis in fact.
Obviously, such deep-rooted fears are never overcome in a single session of social anxiety therapy.
However, with time and the desire to overcome their aversion to social interaction, patients suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder can experience a remarkable degree of recovery through the use of psychotherapy.
