On the morning of September 11, 2001, al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners in a planned attack against the United States. The terrorists intentionally flew two jet airliners into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City and a third aircraft into the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. A fourth aircraft, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into an open field in Somerset County, PA, killing all passengers, crew members, and terrorists on board.


Thanks to the heroic actions of Flight 93 was the only one of the four hijacked aircraft that failed to reach the terrorists' intended target that day.

This year marks 10 years since that tragic morning and the Flight 93 National Memorial will hold a very special dedication and commemoration.

The weekend of September 10-11, 2011 will be filled with many ways to honor the story of Flight 93. Events will be spread over the entire weekend and will be open to the public.

Tickets: No tickets will be required.
New Entrance: Signs will direct visitors to the new entrance which will be located on US 30.
Parking: There will be field parking and visitor shuttles will provide access to the events.

Memorial Dedication

Dedication of Phase 1 of the permanent memorial will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will last for approximately two hours. Musical tributes, wreath layings, and additional activities will continue through the afternoon.

An evening event is planned and details will be announced at a later date.

Lighting of Luminarias

The Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial will place and lit 2,982 luminarias, one for each life lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The 10th Anniversary Memorial Service will start at 9:30 a.m. This start time was chosen to commemorate the time period during which the passengers and crew took action on the plane to thwart the terrorists. Musical tributes, wreath layings, and additional activities will continue through the afternoon.

Flight 93 National Memorial will be closed to the public on the morning of Monday, September 12, 2011 and reopen at 1 p.m.

Group Visits

Groups wishing to attend the weekends events should contact the park office at 814-893-6322 in advance of the weekend. While the park is not taking reservations, this information is a very important part of the event planning. Please include the following information:

• Type of transportation (bus, motorcycle, etc...)
• Number of participants.
• Number of vehicles
• Arrival time and estimated duration of visit.
• If the group plans to attend any of the formal events.

If your group would like to conduct a special event or ceremony, then you will need to apply for a Special Use Permit.
