Wall Switch Control Instructions for a Motion Light
- There should be a light switch that powers your motion detector light. If you replaced a regular light fixture with a motion sensor light, the same switch that turned your old light on and off also powers your new motion light. Leave this switch "On" at all times for your motion detector to work according to its design. Motion sensor lights turn off automatically after a certain amount of time as pre-determined by the manufacturer, even if the light switch remains "On." Leaving the switch "On" means your light will turn "On" and "Off" as needed when people move in and out of the motion sensor's detection field.
- There may be times when you want your motion sensor lights disabled. For example, if you expect trick-or-treaters on Halloween, you may not want the motion detector over your garage to turn your light on and off all night long. To turn your motion light off and prevent it from turning on when the motion sensor detects movement, flip the light switch that powers your motion light to the "Off" position. When you want your motion light activated again, flip the switch to "On."
- If your motion detector light switch is "On," but your light still doesn't work properly, some easy troubleshooting tips may solve the problem. Some motion sensor lights don't work well with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), the spiral shaped energy saving light bulbs. These bulbs take a while to warm up and shine brightly, meaning your light may not turn on at full power when you use CFLs. Adjusting the distance your motion detector sensor is set at may also help your light turn on and off the way you want it to. There should be a dial or a switch on the bottom of your motion detector light fixture so you can adjust the distance so it's appropriate with the way you want your lights to turn on and off. If you still have problems with your motion lights, try to replace the bulbs.
