How to Fix Cracks & Gouges in Marble
- 1). Wash off the cracked or gouged area of the marble countertop with a water-moistened sponge. Let the surface air dry before continuing.
- 2). Place the edge of a medium-grit piece of sandpaper against the countertop, to one side of the crack or gouged area. Push down on the edge as you drag the sandpaper across the crack/gouged area until the other side is reached. Remove the sandpaper and repeat the procedure an additional three times.
- 3). Inspect the inside edges of the crack/gouged area to confirm that they are now jagged -- if not, repeat the procedure with the sandpaper until they are. Blow off the dust that has been generated with bursts of compressed air.
- 4). Tape around the cracked/gouged area with painter's tape. Apply acetone to a clean rag. Brush the crack/gouged area with the moistened edge of the rag. Let the acetone dry for the amount of time specified in its instructions.
- 5). Mix the contents of a marble resin kit in a paper cup with a wooden stir stick as per its directions. Place the mixture on the end of a wooden stir stick.
- 6). Place the edge of the stick against the countertop, to one side of the crack or gouged area. Push down on the edge as you drag the stick across the cracked/gouged area until the other side is reached. Repeat this procedure until the crack/gouged area is filled with the resin.
- 7). Place a dry edge of the stick against the countertop, to one side of the cracked or gouged area. Push down on the edge as you drag the stick across the crack/gouged area to remove excess resin. Dispose of the stick in the trash. Let the resin set for the amount of time specified in its instructions.
- 8). Place a fine-grade buffing pad on the end of a power drill and lock it in place. Buff the surface of the countertop where the cracked/gouged area has been filled in. Continue buffing until the area appears even with the rest of the countertop.
- 9). Wipe off the countertop with a water-moistened sponge. Let the surface air dry. Remove the painter's tape.
