The Combination of Anxiety and Weight Loss
When you're anxious, you are in a negative state.
You're in a form of sustained stress.
This negative holding pattern is not conducive to weight loss.
Forget the people who lose weight when stressed, most of the time, anxiety and weight loss don't make good dance partners.
Sure some people seem to lose weight due to great stress, but anxiety is a little different beast.
It tends to be low-lying and steady, just enough to keep your body out of balance.
It drains the energy your body needs to lose weight.
Like an energy vampire, it sucks out the necessary to appease the insatiable appetite of worry and fear.
Let's take an example.
Let's say that you've got financial problems.
Maybe you can't pay off your credit card debts.
Maybe money's tight for many other reasons.
So much of your thoughts and energy are focused on getting you out of this debt or stressful financial situation.
You decide to lose weight because not only do you feel poor, but fat and ugly too.
(Yes, these feelings tend to hang around together!) So you focus on losing weight.
You pick a tough, lose-10 lb-in-three-days plan.
You're practically starving yourself.
You hate the foods you're eating and now you've taken away the only pleasures and enjoyable parts of your day: your meal times.
Do you see how you're adding more stress to your current situation? Do you see how this will make things more difficult most likely bringing you down emotionally because you're going to fail at the diet then back lash and gain weight? Then those feelings of failure will only maintain your negative outlook on your current financial situation? You have no energy to find better solutions to improve your financial situation.
That's when you throw in the towel and call defeat: "I'll always be poor and fat!" The good news is that if you can relax enough to reduce your anxiety and stress in your life, then when you approach dieting from a more positive attitude, you'll make better decisions, ones that will feel right for you and ultimately stick.
If you've ever noticed anyone who's suddenly fallen in love, they tend to lose weight and look great! Those new feelings of love reduce any anxiety about their physical selves and situations.
It's these feelings of joy that enable her to lose weight without so much effort.
So, if you are looking to lose weight and cannot, then take some time to see where any underlying anxiety might be.
If possible, journal about your feelings in general.
How do you currently feel about these major areas of your life: relationships, career, finances, body and your self-esteem? Journal about your feelings for a few days and see what problems or issues emerge.
Then decide on some small actions to improve that area of your life.
When you feel you've made some progress, even baby steps, then you can focus on weight loss and taking actions to improve your weight and body without undue anxiety.
