Fireplaces are a unique, but often underutilized decorating tool for homeowners, in that a few simple changes to them can instantly change and refresh the décor of an entire room. However, redesigning a fireplace can be an overwhelming process if there are an unlimited number of ideas to choose from, which make it difficult to decide on the best one choice for you and your home. Redesigning a fireplace can be relatively simple, if you want it to be, by adding a single statement piece to the mantle such as a candlestick, or decorative box, or changing the mantle to reflect the changing seasons. Other re-designs can be extremely complicated, such as redesigning a fireplace with marble instead of brick, but are really not necessary.

One of the easiest, and most overlooked ways to change the look of both your fireplace, and your home is to incorporate decorative corbels. These can be attached under the mantel or at the top of your fireplace. Corbels can dress-up a fireplace, without draining your wallet. A corbel can either be used as a decorative tool or a support device. Remember that choosing a corbel as a supportive element will require additional measures to make sure it support the weight that is rested on it.

The most popular design for corbels are nature themes, with most incorporating flowers, vines, leaves, and grapes into the design. Corbels are typically made out of either polyurethane or wood, however some are made out of plaster, stone, or even marble. Corbels are easy to install, making them the perfect home improvement project for beginners. Decorative corbels are an easy an inexpensive way to instantly brighten up your fireplace, making it a beautiful and updated addition to your home.
