Not everyone wants to move to get the ideal home they want. Indeed some people might already be in that home - they just want to make some improvements to make it even better.

But you must always think about the possibility of selling somewhere down the line. And when you do, you need to know that your improvements will have added value and not taken it away.

Basically speaking there are both major and minor improvements you can make to your home. Minor ones are really more in the way of decoration - things that can be changed again at some point if you don't like them or get tired of them. Major improvements are things that won't be changed again unless you decide to knock them down!

A good example would be a conservatory. A lot of people looking to buy a home would be swayed by a house that has a conservatory, because it offers a versatile room that can really enhance a home. If you have the room in your garden to give a portion of it over to the construction of a conservatory, then it is well worth doing so. Not only will you get plenty of use from it, but if you come to sell at any point it should help you make a quick sale too.

It's important too though to consider the consequences if you want to make changes inside your home. Many people think that it's worth ditching the garage in order to get an extra room, or perhaps even a double storey extension on their home. But it isn't always a good move. You may not have a car, and if you do you may not park it in the garage. But supposing you want to move?

Most people want a garage because it means they can get their car off the road and safely locked up. And that can lead to less to pay on the car insurance! If you have built an extension where the garage used to be and there is no option but to park a car on the road, you might find it harder to sell.

Loft conversions also aren't as straightforward as you might think. They can be an excellent choice but always bear in mind the bathroom situation as well. If a loft conversion is going to add two more bedrooms, it will cause problems if you can't add another bathroom at the same time. Always consider all the options and see which ones the layout of your home will permit you to do the easiest of all.

In the end you can enhance the look and value of your home, but care needs to be taken to make sure a split second decision really does pay off in the long term.
