DIY Steampunk Guitars
- 1). Remove strings and the pick guard from the guitar. If the guitar has no black anywhere on it, paint the guitar black, or paint around the perimeter of the guitar with aerosol black paint. It doesn't have to be perfect. Aim for an industrial look.
- 2). Screw or glue pieces of speaker grill, small brass tubes, clock parts, gears or anything that reflects open machinery to the guitar body. Keep them out of the way of your right hand when playing the guitar.
- 3). Paint gears, tubes, screws, wires or any kind of machinery on the pick guard with gold paint. Try to make it look like an open machine. It doesn't have to be perfect. It can look like a jumbled mess and still qualify as Steampunk.
- 4). Screw the pick guard back on the guitar using oversized brass screws or knobs. Screw brass knobs, handles, or any shiny gold metal rivets or screws on the guitar body. Unscrew the two strap hangars from both ends of the guitar. Replace them with large, brass handles or knobs.
- 5). Lace bright copper wire through the guitar strap. Place anything brass that you can find on the guitar strap that won't interfere with your playing. To finish off the Steampunk guitar look, place a pair of goggles on your forehead when you play.
