Putting in a Small Pond in the Backyard
- 1). Choose a location for your pond where it can be observed from the window, deck or other vantage point. To keep the pond clean, locate it in an area with a higher elevation so water does not run into the pond during a heavy rain. Also, locating the pond away from trees prevents excessive leaves from collecting in the pond.
- 2). Measure the area for how wide and deep you would like the pond to be. To figure out how large a piece of pond liner you need, use a measuring tape to measure the maximum depth of the pond and multiply that by 3. Then, measure the maximum width and length of the pond. Add the three figures together to give you the diameter of the sheet of pond liner you will need. Although the liner will be larger than the hole, remember you need to have a good portion of the liner over the edge of the new pond. You can always trim away extra liner if needed.
- 3). Dig the pond as planned. You will use the dirt you are removing from the hole to build up the area around the pond so water drains away from it. Remove all rocks from the bottom of the pond that can puncture the pond liner. You might vary the depth of the pond, especially if you are adding plants in pots. A hill or raised area to place a pot should be 12 inches in diameter to securely hold the pot in place and to take into account some settling of the soil.
- 4). Add the pond liner and secure the edges with a few rocks. Fill the pond with water and allow the liner to adjust itself as the pond fills.
- 5). Add rocks and vegetation around the pond to secure the liner and to create a natural look.
