How to Perform Japa Yoga

    • 1). Choose a quiet place where you can perform Japa Yoga on a daily basis in the same location without any disturbances. Set aside a specific time (about an hour) preferably at dawn or dusk for this practice.

    • 2). Sit in a comfortable position or pose on a rug. The spine should be erect and place the hands in your lap. Before beginning this practice say an appropriate prayer.

    • 3). Close your eyes, quiet your mind and begin doing some breathing exercises for 5 minutes. Concentrate on breathing in and out evenly.

    • 4). Begin to mentally repeat the mantra you chose beforehand with feeling. You can also choose to repeat the mantra out loud and use a mala rosary that consists of 108 beads to keep count of the repetitions. Pronounce the mantra clearly and without mistakes. A mantra like OM is suitable or it can be associated with the devotee's deity.

    • 5). Repeat the mantra neither too slow nor too fast for the duration of the practice session. Be alert during Japa Yoga and keep your concentration on the mantra. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the mantra and continue with the repetitions.

    • 6). Conclude your meditation practice with a prayer and then sit silently for 10 minutes before resuming your daily tasks.
