Ways to Use Tempered Paint

    Proper Mixing

    • Mix your tempered paint to the proper consistency first to get the best results. First, make sure your egg yolk and pigment are at the proper ratio. It should have a greasy or slightly watery appearance. Thin out the tempered paint by adding some water, a little at a time. The more water, the less intense and rich the color will be.

    Painting Technique

    • There are a few different painting techniques you should try out. Dip your paintbrush into the mixture and then gently touch the tip to a clean rag to extract extra moisture. Now paint on your chosen surface. The brush will seem like a dry brush without the drag. If you want a transparent layer of paint, such as one that is a large shadowed area or base for an object, you will want to use a tempered mixture with a bit more water added. Use a wider brush for wider strokes. Allow this layer to dry before adding layers on top of it. Add layers with progressively smaller brushes. The smaller the brush and the thicker the tempered paint, the more detailed you painting will be. Remember to always start with the larger, broader items and work your way towards the details. Thoroughly wash the brush between each color change.

    Paper Painting

    • Choose a thick style of paper on which you will paint. This should be porous enough to hold the paint but not too thick. Sheets of writing paper are too thin and processed for using tempered paint. The paint would just puddle on the top of sheet paper. You can sketch an image first or paint freehand. Prepare the paint and let your creation flow. Just remember that tempered paint dries quickly, so work in small, controlled areas.

    Canvas Painting

    • Purchase a canvas that is already prepared for painting. This way you don't have to waste time prepping the canvas and it will also eliminate the chance that you may improperly season the canvas surface. Canvas is porous because of the cotton fibers, but using a prepared one will help to keep the paint from soaking up immediately before you can thoroughly work with it. Sketch an image or do freehand designs.

    Wood Painting

    • You can apply tempered paint to a wood surface for overall color or to add decorative details. Prepare the surface with a rabbit skin glue to preserve, protect and fill in the porous surface. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours. Then you need to apply a heated gesso mixture to all wood surfaces and allow it to dry for 24 hours more. You can also paint wooden craft pieces, such as children's picture frames or figurines.
