Bay Area Juggling Clubs
- Juggling is a skill that's been around since at least 1990 B.C., when it was depicted on the wall of an Egyptian tomb. It requires excellent coordination, timing and a sense of the theatrical so necessary to any performer. Whether you juggle clubs, balls, cigar boxes or rings, there is a club in the Bay Area where you can find other jugglers who share your passion.
- The San Francisco Gutter Jugglers have an unusual motto: "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are inspecting the drains." The club meets on Thursday evenings in the Theater Room of the Circus Center, 755 Frederick Street, near Golden Gate Park. The Gutters welcome all skill levels, and they have loaner equipment. The fee is nominal; for more information, email Andrew at conway@juggling.org.
- The Berkeley Juggling Club has a flexible schedule. They meet on Wednesday afternoons on the University of California at Berkeley campus, in the park outside the Hearst Mining Building by the fountain on sunny days. If the weather turns cold or gloomy, the group moves inside the building to whatever room is available. If the door is locked and you see people juggling inside, just knock on the window. When the weather is really nice, the club often meets on Sunday afternoons in Willard Park, one block east of Telegraph Avenue. The Berkeley Jugglers also has a sister club for unicyclists. For more information, go to berkeleyjuggling.org.
- The Klutz Juggling Club of Palo Alto is difficult to find unless you are on its mailing list, as the location changes from week to week. The club meets somewhere in either Palo Alto or at Rengstorff Park in Mountain View. To get the schedule, email Matt at juggle_sensei@hotmail.com.
There are two juggling clubs at Stanford University. The Stanford Court Jugglers meet at the Cubberley Auditorium lobby in the School of Education building Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. Down With Gravity gets together on the grass in White Plaza near the Stanford Bookstore on Friday afternoons, except during summer or other times when school is out.
The SJSU Juggling Club meets Mondays from noon to 1:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 1:45 to 2:45 on the San Jose State University campus either on the field near MacQuarrie Hall or inside Duncan Hall if it's raining. You need not be a student to participate. Not only is everyone welcome, but free lessons and equipment are provided. For more information email Brad at jackson@math.sjsu.edu.
The Santa Clara Juggling Club meets Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. unless it is raining. Contact cosmo@cosmoproductions.com. - The Flingin' Fools are favorites in Sebastopol, a wine country town just north of San Francisco in Sonoma County. From October to March, the club meets at the Rohnert Park Sports Center just off the Rohnert Park Expressway at Snyder Lane, and from April to September the jugglers gather at Ives Park on High Street in Sebastopol. Call (707) 794-0634 or email afernald@pacbell.net for more information.
