How to Apply for a Massage Parlour License
- 1). Visit the web page of the appropriate licensing agency for your state or municipality. The website Massage Register (see References) offers a list of massage boards by state along with a link to the appropriate agency. If your state does not issue the license, the board can tell you how to properly register the business.
- 2). Call the appropriate authority to learn what paperwork your need to submit. In some cases, you may download the application and directions to fill it out from the licensing authority.
- 3). Secure the necessary licensing and documentation. The list will vary by state, but can include a business license, your proof as a massage therapist, a police criminal history report and a list of all of your employees or contractors who will perform massage.
- 4). Take the appropriate exam. Some states, such as Texas, stipulate that applicants for a massage establishment license take an examination that tests the applicant's understanding of rules and laws regarding the practice of massage.
- 5). Obtain character references, if necessary. Certain municipalities, such as Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, require applicants for a massage establishment license to have two references that can attest to their character.
- 6). Secure insurance for your massage business. This may include liability insurance and worker's compensation insurance to cover employees in case of injury.
- 7). Prepare your facility to meet standards for cleanliness. Obtain the mandated equipment and ensure the facility has a sufficient number of washrooms and sinks.
- 8). Open your establishment to the board inspector. She might inspect the establishment's compliance with local health, zoning, building, fire and safety ordinances.
- 9). Fill out the application, have it signed and notarized, and submit it along the required paperwork and the appropriate fee to the licensing authority.
