    • 1). Fill a large bucket or tub with water. This container will be the water source for your family's potable water needs. Because a small amount of chemicals can purify a large amount of water, it will be easiest to use a 5-gallon bucket. If using iodine as your purifying agent, the water container's surface should be dark. Iodine is light sensitive.

    • 2). Filter the water if it is cloudy. You can use coffee filters or cheesecloth for this process. Filtering will remove particles from the water.

    • 3). Add the cleansing agent in an amount appropriate for the amount of water you need purified. The agent will be iodine or chlorine. The most-portable purifying agent is iodine tablets. It is also the most effective agent. Mix thoroughly.

    • 4). Let the water stand for at least 30 minutes before using it. This time period allows the purifying agent to cleanse the water. If the water looks cloudy or it is very cold, let it stand for 60 minutes.
