How to Install a Backyard Pond & Waterfall
- 1). Measure out the area for your pond in a sunny location away from shade. Mark the location with a chalk line.
- 2). Dig down 18 to 36 inches inside the chalk outline to make the pit for the pond. Use a tamper tool to compact the soil at the bottom.
- 3). Add a 1-inch layer of sand over the bottom of the pit and lay a heavy-gauge vinyl liner into the pond area. Secure the ends of the vinyl along the edge of the pond using rocks.
- 4). Mound the soil from inside the pit along one end of the pond to create a small hill.
- 5). Place a piece of plastic liner on the mound and line it with rocks. Lay flat rocks at the bottom of the pile to act as spill stones. Add a waterfall foam sealant along the bottom of the spill stones to keep water from leaking. Add small gravel to complete the look.
- 6). Add a basin and water pump at the bottom area of the pond. Attach a hose to the water pump and lead it up to the top of the waterfall feature. Bury the length of the pipe using the rest of the dirt form inside your pond pit to keep the hose hidden.
- 7). Slowly fill your pond making sure the vinyl liner stays straight and does not fall into it. Cover the excess liner that may spill over the side with dirt to hide it. Turn on the water pump and test your waterfall.
