The Wedding Ring - Some Custom and Some Fables
Wearing a ring, by a man, is not as common as is the wearing of a ring by a woman.
Women do wear rings for engagement and also for weddings but in the past we do not find much history of men wearing a wedding ring.
It might have been to keep a cover to the status for whatever reason or might have been a manly custom of the family that has stopped men to wear the ring on his finger.
The women had their own custom and it was a sign of a married woman to be wearing the band on her left hand.
The wedding band used to be worn by the wives and the men mostly started wearing them from the 20th century.
The ring is worn on the left ring finger which has a good fable that it has a vein that goes straight to the heart and hence the couple chooses this finger for the ring.
Though this is fable or story and is baseless - the custom may have started with this.
The rings worn by the couple are set in together and the best man or woman hands over the ring to the couple and they put the ring to each others fingers in the midst of blessings and music.
The custom for wearing a wedding band together makes it necessary for the rings to be almost similar.
The ring for men is wider in design as they have fingers wider than the women.
The golden bands were more common till now but the new generations do fall for something that has not been done before and hence they go for designed rings like the Celtic rings or the designs from traditional scriptures that show heart or a crown and the hand holding a heart.
The engraved rings are also common now as this gives the independence of engraving anything on the band to make it a memory.
