Green Google Saves Energy, Money and the Environment?

Combine the world's most popular web page (and search engine) with the least efficient colour for monitors to produce (white) and what do you have? A lot of potentially wasted energy! Judy A.
Roberson, who works in conjunction with the U.
S.
Environmental Protection Agency (Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Division) and the United States Department of Energy (Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy).
discovered the "image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.
" Roberson et al, 2002.
In short: white websites use more power on average than black websites.
Combine the popularity of Google with a more efficient use of power, and you could potentially save millions of kilowatts, save users money on their energy bill, and most importantly reduce environmental damage.
A very simple solution to implement, as easy as a simple color change.
Given Google receives an estimated over 1200 billion Google searches per day, estimates for the energy saving figures of using a black background for Google are in the figure of 750-3000 Megawatt hours per year.
This figure does take into consideration that some monitors and display technologies use more power than others.
Whilst it is proven the average CRT computer monitor will reduce environmental impact if the screen displays black instead of white, even though the power usage is reduced, keep in mind it is still using some amount of power.
What is not as obvious is that searching for a phrase in a search engine uses a lot of processing power, not just on your own computer, but on Google's servers.
Whilst "the big G" are currently still in the research stage of investigating sustainable power sources to run their servers, in my experience as a "green computing" consultant I am aware of only one search engine using Google's search technology that combines carbon offset/renewable energy technology with the theory of more efficient searching and using less power consumption - Regoog energy saving search engine.
Regoog will offset 100% of their (and your) calculated energy consumption by voluntarily neutralizing the carbon emission outputs used to run their website and provide their free community service.
Not only will you save money on your energy bills by using their black search engine, the environmental impact is neutralized, so when using Regoog your energy consumption is offset to zero! You will be doing the world a favour unlike other standard websites.
What steps can I do to help? Now if only we could encourage more websites to help the environment.
If you run a website consider the benefits of renewable power technology and offsets, and even if you don't run a web site, spread the word about sites who do!
