Kidney Infection Treatment: Causes, Medication, Prevention

A kidney infection treatment can be started as soon as you get the proper diagnosis and the proper antibiotics for you. Before starting a treatment, you should consult your doctor first about your particular case because even if kidney infections might be similar, there are always several factors that distinguish people's cases from each other.

Kidney infection is actually a part of a wider scope of infections called the urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are often treated with antibiotics. Kidneys filter wastes and toxins from the body, regulate blood pressure, control electrolytes, and help in red blood cells production. When these are infected, it is referred to as pyelonephritis.

There are several components to a kidney infection treatment. First of all, you need to be certain about what has been the cause of the renal infection. This kind of infection has three common causes, namely kidney stones, sexual intercourse, and pregnancy.

Kidney stones block the flow of urine when they are lodged in the ureters. As a result, instead of flowing to the bladder, the urine has to go back to the kidneys, which will infect the kidneys. This can cause inflammation and, eventually, pain.

For women, sexual intercourse can be the source of renal infection because through the vagina and urethra, bacteria can enter the urinary system. Once the bacteria enter the system, they can ascend to the kidneys and infect the organ.

As for pregnant women, they are also prone to renal infection because the enlarged uterus increases the pressure on the ureters, which slows down the flow of urine to the bladder. This can also lead to renal infection.

Upon knowing the cause of the infection, the treatment will start with the doctor's specific prescription of antibiotics. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the case, the doctor will prescribe certain antibiotics and the corresponding dosage. You have to immediately start your medication so that you can start killing the bacteria. You also have to make sure that you maintain and/ or finish the medication so that all the bacteria will be killed and flushed out of the body. With this, make sure to drink lots of water or fluids so that you are hydrated and so that the toxins will be removed from the body.

To prevent a repeated infection and avoid another kidney infection treatment, be more meticulous of hygiene practices (especially for women). You may also eat cranberries or drink cranberry juice since these are proven to be beneficial in the prevention of renal infection.
